NutriCape is advancing next-generation aquaculture nutrition through bio-encapsulation technologies designed to improve nutrient delivery, enhance feed efficiency and reduce environmental impact. By enabling precision nutrient release, the venture contributes to more sustainable and resilient aquaculture systems.
Founder Rishika Reddy shares: "Since participating in the Ocean Community Challenge, NutriCape has been advancing its work on bio-encapsulation technologies for aquaculture nutrition."
Since the Challenge
The team has been refining its core technology, including a nano-encapsulated phytase for aquafeed to improve nutrient bioavailability and reduce environmental loss. In parallel, they are developing micro-encapsulation for larval feeds to enhance stability and nutrient retention in early stages. Their progress is supported by collaborations with CIBA, while a partnership with IACS is being established to strengthen materials science and support commercialization.
The approach
NutriCape's work focuses on precision nutrient delivery through advanced nano- and micro-encapsulation. A key challenge is ensuring each formulation meets multiple goals—stability, bioavailability, manufacturability, and system compatibility—requiring extensive experimentation and iteration.
Ocean Community Challenge
"Being part of the Ocean Community Challenge helped us expand our perspective beyond our initial focus areas": NutriCape's early development focused mainly on shrimp aquaculture. The Ocean Community Challenge helped broaden this scope by connecting the team with stakeholders across other segments, such as salmon and marine systems, and deepening their understanding of market needs, sustainability priorities, and technology gaps. This exposure supported adapting their encapsulation technologies to a wider range of species and positioning them within the global ocean innovation community.
Defining moments
"One of the defining aspects of our journey has been the interdisciplinary nature of the work."
Bringing together expertise in biotechnology, aquaculture, materials science and engineering has been both a challenge and a strength. At the same time, encouragement and validation from stakeholders and potential customers, even during slower development phases, have been highly motivating and reinforced the relevance of their solution.
What drives the work
"What continues to motivate our work is the potential environmental impact of improving aquaculture nutrition systems."
The work is driven by the opportunity to reduce nutrient leakage, mitigate challenges such as eutrophication and support healthier aquatic ecosystems. But there is another equally important motivation: by improving how nutrients and functional compounds are delivered through feed, NutriCape aims to support stronger, more resilient aquatic organisms and reduce the frequency and severity of disease outbreaks.
Looking ahead
"In five years, if everything goes right, we see NutriCape evolving into a platform technology company for precision ingredient delivery."
NutriCape’s encapsulation technologies are also designed to extend beyond aquaculture into agriculture and animal nutrition, addressing a common challenge: nutrients and bioactive compounds are often lost, degraded or poorly absorbed before they reach where they are needed.
What success means
"Beyond financial growth, success for us would mean that our technology genuinely helps aquaculture producers optimize nutrient delivery and improve the overall health of their farming systems."
For NutriCape, success means reducing nutrient losses, improving feed efficiency and contributing to more resilient and environmentally responsible aquaculture. It also means that the people working with and around NutriCape feel a strong sense of purpose, fulfillment and shared ownership in building solutions that contribute to both scientific progress and sustainable food systems.
