Ocean Community at VI Jornadas do Mar: Amplifying the Voices of the Ocean

We at Ocean Community were delighted to participate in the "Voices of the Sea" session during the VI Jornadas do Mar, held from March 14–16, 2025, at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS) in Porto. This annual student congress, dedicated to Marine Biology, has become a vital platform for presenting the latest research and addressing the most pressing challenges facing our oceans today.

This year’s edition continued its tradition of tackling contemporary issues in marine sciences, with a special emphasis on combating misinformation. VI Jornadas do Mar has firmly established itself as an essential meeting point for professionals, students, and ocean enthusiasts committed to advancing marine science and conservation.

The "Vozes do Mar" scientific fair, held on the opening day, March 14, brought together a vibrant mix of maritime enthusiasts and industry professionals to explore the evolving relationship between humanity and the ocean. As an organization dedicated to ocean conservation and sustainable development, we found this event particularly aligned with our mission and values. The session served as a powerful reminder of the ocean’s critical importance to our lives — and the urgent need to protect it.

Ocean Community was proudly represented by two of our Ocean Ambassadors: João Fonseca and Margarida Silva from Aveiro University. Backed by our founder, Susanne Wedin-Schildt, they engaged in dynamic conversations with students on site, sharing insights about Ocean Community’s learning and innovation programs and promoting the vital role of Ocean Ambassadors in spreading awareness and inspiring action for the ocean.

During the "Vozes do Mar" session, we also had the opportunity to engage with brilliant young minds on key topics, including:

  • Sustainable Blue Economy: Discussing innovative strategies for balancing economic development with the protection and regeneration of marine ecosystems.

  • Youth Engagement: Highlighting the crucial role of young voices in shaping ocean policies and stewarding the future of our blue planet — in harmony with the event’s strong focus on youth participation.

As we left the event, we carried with us a renewed sense of inspiration and a strengthened commitment to protecting our oceans for generations to come.

The VI Jornadas do Mar continues to be a cornerstone event for the marine community, sparking essential conversations and fostering meaningful collaborations. We look forward to seeing how future editions will continue to chart the course for a healthier, more resilient ocean.
