Are you Ocean Literate?

Knowledge is the foundation for innovation and action. Understanding the ocean is the first step toward protecting it and shaping a sustainable future for people and planet.

So, what does it mean to be Ocean Literate?

To be ocean literate is to understand the ocean’s impact on our lives, and, equally, our impact on the ocean. This understanding empowers individuals and communities to make informed decisions that support a healthy ocean and a thriving society.

Ocean literacy goes beyond facts and definitions. It connects science with everyday life, responsibility with opportunity, and knowledge with action.

Why the Ocean Matters to us all

The ocean is the foundation of life on Earth. It regulates our climate, provides the air we breathe and much of the food we eat, supports livelihoods, and enables global trade and mobility. Its ecosystems protect coastlines and help maintain the balance that makes our planet habitable.

At the same time, much of the ocean remains unexplored. Beneath its surface lie ecosystems and resources that could hold solutions to some of humanity’s most pressing challenges—from climate change to health and medicine.

Understanding the ocean is therefore not optional—it is essential.

From Understanding to Action

Becoming ocean literate is not about knowledge alone, it is about what we do with that knowledge.

Through learning, we build the capacity to:

  • Recognize the value of healthy ocean ecosystems

  • Understand the challenges the ocean faces

  • Support protection, restoration, and sustainable use

  • Contribute to solutions that are environmentally responsible and socially beneficial

Ocean literacy lays the foundation for innovation, collaboration, and long-term impact.
