The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved draft regulations to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from global shipping by 2050. Endorsed at MEPC 83 in April 2025, the proposal includes a fuel standard to reduce emissions intensity and a pricing mechanism for excess emissions. The rules will apply to ships over 5,000 gross tonnage, which account for around 85% of international shipping CO₂ emissions. Formal adoption is expected in October, with enforcement beginning in 2027. This is the first time an entire sector will face both emissions limits and carbon pricing. The move signals growing regulatory momentum, driving innovation in low-carbon fuels, clean technologies, and compliance strategies vital for climate action and a sustainable ocean economy.
