Beyond the Challenge: Meet Savearth, Ocean Community Challenge 2025 Finalist

Savearth is tackling one of the most urgent resource challenges of our time — water scarcity — by bringing AI-powered smart technology to the hospitality sector. Through acoustic sensing and intelligent monitoring, their device helps hotels reduce water consumption by up to 46% per shower, without requiring complex infrastructure changes.

Founder João Machado shares: "Our focus now is scaling deployments and preparing international expansion to regions facing similar water challenges."

Since the Challenge

Since participating in the Ocean Community Challenge, Savearth has moved from concept to real-world impact. The team has successfully implemented pilots with major hotel groups across Portugal, including PortoBay, Numa and Hilton, as well as in the Algarve, where water scarcity is becoming increasingly critical. Alongside these deployments, Savearth has expanded its team, secured private investment and strengthened partnerships with hotels and sustainability-focused organizations.

The Approach

The core strength of the solution lies in its simplicity: a small, non-invasive device that integrates seamlessly into existing hotel infrastructure. Their "save-to-earn" model rewards guests for eco-showers with incentives like spa vouchers or free drinks, while a dedicated dashboard lets hotels monitor water consumption room by room. Each deployment is designed to deliver immediate, trackable environmental impact while supporting hotels in meeting their sustainability commitments.

Ocean Community Challenge

"Being part of the Ocean Community Challenge helped validate our mission and connect us with a community focused on protecting natural resources."

The Ocean Community Challenge reinforced the importance of water conservation not only as a climate issue but also in the context of marine and coastal ecosystem health. For Savearth, it was an opportunity to share their vision with fellow innovators and deepen their commitment to building solutions that contribute to a more sustainable future.

Defining Moments

"One of the most defining moments for us was seeing our technology deployed in real hotel environments and realizing that a small device could generate measurable environmental impact."

Working directly with hotel teams and witnessing tangible reductions in consumption reinforced Savearth's belief that simple, scalable solutions can make a meaningful difference. Like most startups, the journey has included its share of challenges, from hardware development to breaking into a traditional industry, but each obstacle helped refine the product and strengthen the team's resolve.

What Drives the Work

"What motivates us most is the urgency of the water crisis."

In regions like southern Europe, including the Algarve and parts of Spain, drought and water scarcity are already affecting communities and tourism destinations. Knowing that their technology can reduce water consumption at scale, without requiring complex infrastructure changes, drives the Savearth team every day. They are inspired by the idea that technology, when designed with sustainability in mind, can help entire industries operate more responsibly.

Looking Ahead

"In five years, if everything goes right, Savearth will be deployed in thousands of hotels across water-stressed regions, helping reduce millions of liters of water consumption every day." Savearth's long-term goal is to make water efficiency a standard practice in the global hospitality industry. Beyond the technology itself, they hope to help shift the mindset of the tourism sector towards smarter resource management where sustainability is not just a goal, but an operational standard.

What Success Means

"Success means measurable environmental impact — knowing that our technology is helping reduce water and energy consumption in hotels around the world and contributing to the protection of one of our most critical natural resources."

For Savearth, success also means building a company that attracts talented people who want to work on meaningful climate solutions and creating technology that allows businesses to grow while respecting planetary limits.
